Welcome to the WCS EC Department!

Thank you for visiting our Watauga County Schools Exceptional Children Department webpage.  It is my hope that you will take some time to learn about all the wonderful and exciting things in place to support our students with disabilities. We have many helpful resources for both teachers and parents here as well.

Our goal is to provide quality, appropriate educational services and opportunities to build upon strengths and meet the educational needs of students with disabilities.  We strive to have the best teachers, the best resources and best programs for our students.  We continually reach out to our community partners and parents to strategically improve and expand our services for our students. We are all in this together!

Watauga County Schools offer the full continuum of services in the least restrictive environment for all students eligible for special education from PreK through high school. Our EC PreK program serves children on an itinerant basis in child care centers and in NC PreK classes and evaluates children through our Transdisciplinary Play Based Assessment Center.  Each of our K-8 schools provides services for students with mild disabilities in the regular classroom and/or through resource support. Hardin Park Elementary School has our programs for students with mild, moderate and severe disabilities, including classrooms for children with Autism. Blowing Rock Elementary School has a Day Treatment program provided through a cooperative agreement between Watauga County Schools and Day Mark Recovery Services.  Watauga High School provides consultative services, co-taught classes, curriculum assistance classes, the Occupational Course of Study program and a self-contained program for students with moderate to severe disabilities. Related services such as speech language, occupational and physical therapy are provided when required to assist a child with a disability to benefit from special education.

STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities

The EC Division is excited to announce the 2015 STEM Career Showcase for Students with Disabilities!

· The event will be October 9, 2015. Mark your calendar to bring your students or children to the North Carolina Museum of Natural Sciences in Raleigh.
· To find more information and see a video detailing this upcoming freeevent, please visit:
· This event is intended for students with disabilities in grades 6-12 who are performing at or near grade level.
· Registration will open in August and will be limited to the first 200 students. Register early to ensure your spot.

This year’s showcase will offer poignant models of grit and success in the occupational fields that will shape this country’s future. Please plan to attend this event and show a child that he or she can overcome any obstacle to live a satisfying, fulfilling and awe-inspiring life.

Cards for Caring
Anna Eyler received a $1,500 grant from the Sunrise Rotary Club to start a note card business "Cards for Caring" which will be sold at local businesses to help sustain the Food Pantry at Valle Crucis Elementary School.

The Sunrise Rotary Club gave $100 gift cards to Tammy Gragg, Karla Lerner, Barbara Linnville and Joan Ward to use for classroom supplies.

Huff of Watauga High School and Erin Selle of Hardin Park School have achieved National
